What Does Board Certification Mean?

A board-certified orthodontist, also known as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, has voluntarily undergone peer examination to validate their knowledge and clinical competence. Achieving board certification demonstrates the orthodontist’s commitment to continual skill development and excellence in the field of orthodontics.

American Board of Orthodontics Doctor Certification

The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) was founded in 1929. It is the oldest and most prestigious specialty board in dentistry. The ABO's aim is to elevate the standards of the practice of orthodontia, to familiarize the public with its aim and ideals, and to protect the public against irresponsible and unqualified practitioners.

The Importance of Board Certification

By becoming a board certified orthodontist  it demonstrates that they have achieved the highest level of expertise in their field.  In addition to passing rigorous exams, the certification process requires the orthodontist to submit case studies showing diagnosis, treatment plans and final results. This qualification process ensures that orthodontists who have been awarded ABO certification are dedicated to providing superior patient care.

ABO Certified orthodontists must renew their certification periodically by participating in continuing education courses and experiences and must maintain adherence to the ABO's high standards. Exams or submitting case study documention and submittals are periodically required to show ongoing competency and commitment to professional development.

The Board maintains four key goals aligned with its mission:

  • To assess the knowledge and clinical abilities of graduates from accredited orthodontic programs through examinations and the issuance of time-limited certificates.
  • To conduct recertification exams throughout a Diplomate's career to reassess their clinical knowledge and skills.
  • To foster the development of high-quality orthodontic education at the graduate, postgraduate, and continuing education levels.
  • To advance and promote certification expertise globally.
